The Weekly Magazine - Friday Showing

For Friday 5/3/13

A short movie review with a bio fragment.

Never afraid to use slash say Fuck again. It’s a good plea. Make beauty a promise a burden home, goin again.

A 2012 movie Beauty is Embarrassing  about Wayne White, designer of the pee wees playhouse sets and schlock art, if you happen to be into schlock art and all.

This movie review goes with my recent bio story about being an artist in the first grade, I covered 100’s of shirt cardboards with drawings, see it came way before the dealing with money slash embarrassment.

Money, how to be happy with the exact amount you have, deal with shoulda coulda had more but then I wouldn’t be where I am now. Perfect embarrassment. Now I try to be friends with money and the part that wants to make more sometimes and to kill the feeling of fuck that money anyway.

The little bio story about first grade.

I think it was in becoming an adult that I realized that math was not only something that some could be very interested in but that it, just as much as trying to understand the opposite sex, the workings of the eye and the art of arranging images on a page, math could be a burning passion, filling one’s whole life with mystery and joy. What is it about math that would cause someone to devote their lives to it? As I began to appreciate the magic of math, I also developed a somewhat cheated feeling that my math education missed entirely this universal aspect of numbers.

I was drawn to teaching based on the idea that for us humans it is the ability to faithfully clarify not only the facts of various naturally interesting and profitable fields of study but also the magic. The explainers or teachers like Neil De Grasse Tyson and Bill Nye the Science Guy must share an equal status as the scientists who come up with such great stuff to explain but who are often not capable of explaining it adequately for the novice.

I realized my own passion not only for drawing but as an adult my passion as an explainer or teacher who was not afraid of inspiration and passion, a salesperson for the wonders of the world which all are able to share in, by virtue of being human, a creature without limits.

An article of faith that I gleaned from my love of drawing, that everyone could be an artist except for certain blockages which served to rule it out, such as the idea that “I can’t even draw a straight line” and the idea that “art is not for serious people who could be a pet of a teacher or an educational system”, could apply to all subjects of interest. There is no unintelligent person there are plenty of those who grow up feeling that “knowledge waits” you might not have time for it and worse you might not have the capability for it.

Along with realizing our own limits, like death and an inability to know what can make us happy, it is our understanding or realization of what we don’t know about others potential that are in the heart of a good teacher. Let’s experiment Y’all, we will find great things. For me it was first art and then the magic potential of math which for a while made me feel victimized by and resentful of my school experience. With a strong feeling of challenge about my life from Buddhist practice, I could see that this depressing feeling in me could be turned into great fuel for a teacher.

My deep distrust of systems and organizations made my teaching career one fraught with sufferings but very rewarding in the final analysis. I know the lives of the children I taught and this knowledge is a treasure which can never be taken from me. I can see the faces of young people who feel the joy of learning, who have learned how to learn.

A Message from the Editor

First some more thoughts about f-b, which as far as I can tell deleted a comment I made about a picture mentioning something negative about it. When I posted the comment again sans fxb reference it went right up.

Reading and seeing pictures from friends lives is sort of like reading a magazine each person has been publishing, hopefully without fear of censorship, every mag with it’s style and feeling. Each issue shared is perfectly suited for the computer age being short in length and all together make very inspirational reading.

I’ve always been into magazines just like movies and I hope readers here can share in some of my likes as they are published. Friday Showing has it’s own feel or style which I try not to think about instead watching to see how it develops. Honestly, not just watching but also expressing a desire to make it good. That’s why letters to the editor sent either of at least three different ways, are very special and with permission which is presumed unless noted otherwise, may be be reprinted.

fxb really inspired my writing along with past blogs which had even less style than is shown in this publication. Inspiration I deeply appreciate wherever it is found. As I mentioned before (several times) I have shifted my primary focus to Friday Showing with less focus on fxb. As everyone knows or finds out it is very hard to shift attention away from fxb no matter how noble the thought may be. A writer just wants to write and has some ideas which are perhaps best expressed in a certain way and fxb is good for stimulating, in my case not just my let’s save the world condition but other more personal thoughts as well.

I often come across a little difficulty deciding how refer to writing especially my own also how to categorize content for my mag in the user friendliest way. Let’s say; article, message, publication, rant, piece, story and some others are often thought of as solutions. I decided this afternoon, the best answer is writing, my writings or a writing or wait maybe letter or sutra. No my ‘writings’ does not imply anything other than I know how to put words on a screen or if pressed on paper. I feel I am such a mixed-media and eclectic or eccentric person that placing contentent under, about, blog and even video, gallery and contact, is both difficult and subject to duplicating and location changing.

We can share writing about things or people the later being the most interesting especially with images. In short my appreciation here is for the desire to share both in me and with others. The final words being, I keep my own sense of balance by spending time with people. Real people because the fxb and computer world is, no matter how humanistic I try to be in writing words and sharing pictures, virtual and is not being with such people as we are fortunate or misfortunate (dealing misfortunate folks is actually fortunate after all) to meet in person.

My greatest appreciation is being able to visit and meet with people some of which still do not have a computer or use fxb, a lot. I find it enlightening. It is a Buddhist activity.

About being 14

14 years of age. On the planet 14 years and a human being, that kind of 14. Since we all know that the chronological age often does not define an age of maturity, the fourteen in this meditation is about an age sometimes 12, 13 sometimes 15, and fourteen is the metaphorical age of men.

It may not have always been that way but I’m quite sure after much observation the baseline age of men is fourteen for now. Lot’s of whistles and bells may be attached, a man may be in business, or a trade, a husband, a father, a philosopher, a good soldier, a steady guy, a nice guy, a jock, a doormat or shark, can apply to the man, who remains fourteen. Most often it’s a secret fourteen and sometimes it only appears to others on rare occasions and I mean no harm but seek to be analytical here after all fourteen year olds can be real gentlemen, even heroes.

The truth about men being fourteen, hit me one day after I heard a woman say it, the sky opened up and I saw it clearly, it’s a simple truth. The baseline age for men becomes most apparent on the subject of women, the being who men being fourteen can never really gauge the age of. All men are fourteen, That’s what she said.

Fourteen is something wise men will own and foolish will deny. We all need to come to grips with our fourteen nature in the post cave-man ages in order to win a relationship with women.

What is fourteen if not an age? Fourteen is a low life condition, one paying most attention to women’s breasts. It is assuming knowledge seemingly from deep within of what women really want. It is fear of women when the assumption proves wrong. To put it most simply it is when the penis is managing thought and actions.

Tawdry In Fashion, A Collection.

What Is It, this collection?

Is it an artist looking at trash or is it trash looking at the world?

What’s good about our suffering and products made from the swamps? We don’t live in the swamp of life but so many have spent time there. In the middle of the swamp something like a path or signpost is like cool fresh water or like big city fashions. When we know we’re out of the mucky place - the winning idea is not to leave the experiences behind but to use them, it’s what we have, the images of a unique experience on the planet.

I look for the success in using the images fearlessly and without fear. A way of standing up out of our closet and whatever it holds, a ton of mixed metaphors is someone’s poetry, seeing the beauty of something and putting it out there, what’s not yours becomes yours because you got the picture, the rose or swamp.

The original and the cheap copies, the mistakes in new light, all fragments of life appreciated by someone with a vision; ketch or real art, the official kind you pay for and aren’t afraid to hang or hang out with, the record of people looking for soul and cheap thrills. For sometime I’m going to offer a new posting project, Tawdry in Fashion. The fourteen year old in me expresses more but now with a little consideration and no fear, what I like still. I’m not fourteen anymore. I’ve learned that the more you appreciate the people from Venus the better they become. I did live through a prolonged year of being fourteen.

Tawdry In Fashion, a project like collecting bottle caps or masterpieces. A Collection, never one image of one moment recorded.

footnote -

In my careful study of women both from memory and art I can document that women have the magical power of looking fantastic or wasted, sad or worse, a different person. All do this - all called women. They have beauty to appreciate. One woman is never one image, if you like you can keep looking and see a unique noble life.

I’ve been raised since age 22 to look for the Buddha in each person, so far I’ve seen it’s always there and there for them when they seek it.

The Tawdry In Fashion, as a project sprang from thoughts like those. Naturally if you prefer visual learning like I do, all the better. I can envision teaching a course, Tawdry In Fashion.

As an undergred I had a young looking proclaimed Marxist professor who did a political science course one Summer which I recall was alternating watching feature length independent or Hollywood film and discussing them.* In my opinion those of us needing a light course for credit, actually were interested and got a lot out of it. So mixed media and an ephemeral topic, what could be better. I admit and make note, that if I don’t get any feedback at all, I have to assume the course or the student is getting behind.  SMILE GOES HERE.

I was not able to put a clickable link for it here as planned.

On this show, Jon Stewart and crew tackle the subject of censorship shamelessly and with good humor. In my editorial opinion it belongs right here on Friday Showing. While you're still in a Showing kind of mood, please watch it.

So in instead of the promised Daily Show, razz a mataz on sexy stuff, I offer this quote from the internet:

“Can it be that the nipple is the dividing line for the unacceptable? Right up to the nipple or some other body part or position perhaps being OK but revealing the bump at the end of breast could get one on the poo poo list?

It would be rather like allowing photos of mountains but never showing the snow capped tops. Now you know, unlike the mainstream media, I will push some limits perhaps or perhaps not and learn something or teach something about our community values.”  -  J. Wells
