When a friend suggested I read some essays by E.B. White, I got Here Is New York, which is actually one magazine length essay and as you can see a small book. Below I offer a chilling modern quote from the pleaseant, quite readable book.

I got up from a dream again this morning, I like getting away from it
Sometimes these unpleasant things are where we grow
the most, in dreams.

We can learn from them
in my high school night after night
rushing, explaining
always trying to remember what class I’m supposed to be at
what credits will I need to escape or learn, something.

I have this whole mind thing
it’s really interesting
I really believe in it...
well, because it’s real.
holy s--- look at the attractions around here
not for me
with such serious problems
I can’t define...
let me explain
the smell in the halls is felt in the stomach
this feeling, I’m not where I’m supposed to
climb the stairs with some books slipping crooked
just hold them tighter until you get to the top
then you can find some place to set them?

Then I'm visiting there, with one last chance,
I’m not sure, but maybe...
no books, just some kind of a pass in my hand
but when I read it, it doesn’t say why I’m here at all.
Or what I’ve missed so I can at least be aware of it.
Missing.
Trouble? Yes, you’ll get it.
Think now, look for some clue.
If you forget and go to the wrong place
you have to walk again, to a different floor
at the other side, and it may be wrong
with those books
Later I can go to the library
it’s so nice there, with church windows
and books all locked on the shelves,
but no one is looking
and you can think about it
what is really due?

So much worry released when I get to fuck
and I can write about it.
Take some time from where ...
I can’t even remember.
I still take time, and do it
for my mind thing
so distracting
where, ...you are not supposed to get distracted at all
if you want to “pass”
and these passes are not given out easily
before laptops, music in the ears and beautiful Joyce.
we are so cool, on a very hot day
when schools were not air conditioned
and it is very hard to concentrate at all.

In the morning, I still remember
I can write, it, down.
and learn from it.
