The Weekly Magazine - Friday Showing

For Friday 6/21/13

Looking into Shadows - Photography by Jim Wells

a Slideshow

Some serious thoughts about showing things on Fridays. ....No really.

Getting ready for this issue for June 21st, I looked over most of the archived issues and I haven’t decided to quit the effort.

I did notice that unlike printed magazines, once published, these vital issues tend to jump around quite a bit. This included, text colors changing, video clips disappearing, some elements moved on top of other elements and like that. It seems some of the little things I spend time on tweaking to get just right jump the most.

Still my biggest fear about all these ‘publications’ is that they will one day disappear, this could happen before I am ever discovered as a writer or photographer. I know from experience one day the whole Showing Friday thing could just be gone from the internet into thin air.

Like perhaps 99% of those who seriously would like to known as an artist my budget tends to be tight. A free blog or whatever, wix website hosting is just the right price ... free. So in a time when so many are trying to figure-out how to make some money from internet exploits, it feels a little like I’m on borrowed time anyway, before wix wants a little too.
Those of you who are my avid readers know that even as I complained about our fb, moving us around, if you will, I have expressed my great love of that operation as well.

I would give one of my round appendages to get feedback of any sort about these Fridays, even the ones that don’t get published till Saturday. One friend recommended I read some E.B. White essays which I have done and truly enjoyed and I am sure expanded my limited mind in some ways. More recently over coffee another friend put the concept of networking and it’s importance in a little different light along with his encouragement to do the impossible which I certainly appreciate.

New action plan. Find ways to network with some who already have monetized their internet efforts. When I saw the prices to attend some local conferences on the subject I realized that for now I can read up on how to network about how to monetize the internet at the library, which also can be done for a very low price. (I do remember it is free there).
If you have looked at even one of my Friday Showings and could email me, even just one or two words of thought about it or really anything else under or above the Sun I would be deeply beholden to you. You must know sending an email is definitely not the same as writing.

Speaking of writing all my writing efforts of late have been little snippets on fb or essays, poems or trash in the weekly publication. At least for the Summer, I will be publishing on alternate Fridays so I can get more done on my distopian book and lark about with my camera in hand.

I write this on the longest and maybe most beautiful day of the year, the day followed by Summer. You can see this whole thing must have some profundity. Either way I hope it is something you can enjoy as much as I enjoy putting it together.

The next, Showing Fridays - The Magazine Type Blog, will be July 5th, It will have some bang.

I have no idea why this number only shows on the edit page.

Reconnecting with old friends is one of life's more wonderful novelties - and perhaps one that is slowly dying. This generation and beyond may never know what it's like to lose touch with a friend, and then experience the magic of finding a lost person in their lives. Even if you don't see a friend for years, social media allows you to be tuned into their lives and see current pictures. But the feeling of total isolation from a person you used to care about will soon be unknown.

I had the pleasure of experiencing this phenomenon tonight, and saw a dear friend after discovering that eight years had gone by since we were last in touch! We got to see the Rangers score their first goal of the game in their "official bar," we drank our first post-legal sip of alcohol together, and we traipsed about NYC catching up and enjoying the company of other awesome friends. Life is pretty fantastic sometimes.

--WORDS OF THE WEEK--

A Buddha is one who continues to
strive and challenge oneself.
We accumulate countless benefits
and transform negative karma
amidst our great struggles for
the sake of kosen-rufu.
Let's do our best so that we can

“I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the Heart’s affections and the truth of the imagination,” John Keats famously wrote. John Keats, who also argued for the gift of “negative capability” — the intricate art of embracing uncertainty and living with those shaky in-between states, echoing Einstein’s contention that “the most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious.”

The Inconvenient Truth

Behind Waiting for Superman

I had heard about the movie Waiting for Superman but read and heard from teacher friends that it was anti-teacher and was in no way going to improve education and well I never got around to paying $10 to see it.

The trail led me to this great movie for teachers, parents and community members concerned about education and children.
