What is Nudity and Pornography, fxb knows! Ho Ho Ho
and here’s what they (whoever they may be) have to say.

(F__ebook) “has a strict policy against the sharing of pornographic content and any explicitly sexual content where a minor is involved. We also impose limitations on the display of nudity. We aspire to respect people’s right to share content of personal importance, whether those are photos of a sculpture like Michelangelo's David or family photos of a child breastfeeding.”

Well now that’s clear-cut, sort of, depending on who you are and what you think you know.

Censorship used to protect us (always the children) from eye or psychic damage always has an underlying paradox that bothers artists, patrons and people, there is no usable definition of either art or porn. Thus part of our culture has been left to the one who can block what he thinks the community doesn’t want. Perhaps the poor fellow is very afraid of mobs with pitchforks but he slash she has little sympathy from me.

As in Grosse Point Blank, it’s a job you do not have to take, kind of like being the superintendent of an urban school district, what will it do to your reputation? Will you want your children’s children to know what it was you did. The head of an educational system that is deeply cultural and broken? or the job of hitman? ... it has trouble written all over it.

Does anyone know what the community wants? Is it what a vocal minority trying to protect us from non-religious values wants? Who agrees, the cultural leaders, the schools, the courts, who exactly?

One more thing, what is the history of censorship? Does it have a good honorable history, something to be proud of? Calling people sluts and images porn are old ideas that still summon up irrational fears. Fears what you might see, fears of who you are. Perhaps that’s why each generation has big problems getting rid of their ideas of what’s proper and legal in the realm of victimless crimes and judgments of taste. It seems always safer to be on the side of the censors then you don’t have to explain anything and you won’t stand out. You could blend right in with the 50’s or the 1800’s back when everyone knew was good and what porn was.

“The pulse of joy that beats in us at twenty becomes sluggish. Our limbs fail, our senses rot. We degenerate into hideous puppets, haunted by the memory of the passions of which we were too much afraid, and the exquisite temptations that we had not the courage to yield to.” — Oscar Wilde

The 1880's Buzzworthy, Talk of the Town

Nellie Bly

I grew up hearing the expression, Nellie Bly might come in, when things got excited and wild. You may remember how such a term was used better than I, what stuck with me was the name of the woman who might arrive.

Recently when I was doing a little research on yellow journalism for an illustrious assessment of the MSM, mainstream media, I came across the rather cool story turned myth and the haunting image of her face and I was into Nellie Bly.

I was going to share a few images and some bullet points about her life which turned in this, however long it may be.

Those who shared the vague notion of Nellie with me, might have used the word spunky in her regard. A woman in the late 19th century who was spunky it seems was in very rare company. She was perhaps the first to use detective or ‘stunt’ journalism leading to the once big idea in the media of investigative reporting. That whole thing is very attractive to me.

Only in her twenties and unable in her first thing published (after some kind proofing) a letter to the editor, to use punctuation she fearlessly helped open doors for woman journalists. Her stunts, I define as assignments she gave herself, investigated and wrote up before the editor fully signed on, were irresistible reading to our American and then international news consumers.

The big attention getting feats were her faking insanity in order to get committed to a mental asylum where once in doctors reported she was insane and not subject to release, requiring a lawyer hired by her paper to get her out where she spilled the beans on horrid conditions inside which was shocking.

She left by herself and circled the globe in less time than Jules Vern’s characters in the best selling book, or anyone else ever, spewing reports all the way for front pages back home and everywhere she went. Later surviving her successful container business husband, she designed, manufactured and marketed the first successful steel barrel produced in the United States. She operated factories as a model of decent conditions for her 1,500 employees. Nellie was the first woman to report on the Eastern Front in World War 1 and reportedly went to Paris to argue in behalf of a defeated nation. Her advice column was always widely read and she was dedicated to defending the unfortunate, especially unwed and poor mothers and children.

Elizabeth Jane Cochran was born to Mary Jane, the mother’s third baby and the first girl. Mom dressed her in pink so much she acquired the name Pink very early and kept it until she needed a name to write under for a big newspaper. Her new editor came up with the name Nellie Bly, in time for a deadline.

Due to the fact that Mary Jane was her Dad’s second wife after the first died. He brought 10 children into the marriage, the oldest almost as old as their new Mom. Mary Jane went on to have two more girls. Pink was the real support for her mother who after her first loved husband died had married badly very the second time to an abusive drunk. The girl Pink went to court and testified in behalf of Mary Jane, then needing a divorce.

I’ll stop this info flow soon but I wanted to share this little account she gave to reporters wanting to know how she got into writing.  She said in the late 1860’s when she was “still a babe” I got a letter from “a boy of 12, so I have been told. I had formed his acquaintance while he was visiting his grandmother’s in the country. We got up the flirtation by peeping at each other through crevices in the back fence. He soon called and many long Summer days we spent ‘keeping house’ under the east piazza (yard). Cupid’s cousin, Miss Sudden Fancy, made a dent in our baby hearts. So my little lover wrote me many misspelled love letters after cherry time when he had been taken home.”

I found a lot more inspirational stuff from the wiki article, a kind of confusing but full of good anecdotes book, (Nellie Bly: Daredevil, Feminest, Reporter by Brooke Kroeger) much of which can be read at amazon and a few other places. I want to strictly warn anyone not to use Friday Showing as a source for any term paper. Thank you.

Do You Have to Ask ...

Who Dr. Who?

Random Found on The Internet

I have a not very recent memory of trying to like Dr. Who and I couldn't get into it.

Either I've gotten better or the show has, I think both. Or could it be just Billy Piper playing dear Rose? Well could be but now I just enjoy the whole thing. I thought the comment on the right pretty well sums it up. I have to say I'm such a new convert (thanks to Netflix), that I must say if you didn't know it's OK.

Rose, who doesn't do too much contemplation like this, a smart mind and a free spirit all up for moving and action.

Pretty Rose in strange situation at a strange time where she must get the right answer or get blasted as other contestents on game show have. Shades of Hunger Games.

When the people hid in a church it didn't help much.

Billy Piper and the Doctor will take you away.

IT note: below this black box, there was some text about Nellie Bly being the person who was buzzworthy, when this page was first published.
